Did somebody say gourmet food and Pinot Noir?

by WineGlutton on March 30, 2010

Did somebody say gourmet food and Pinot Noir? Count me in. Last Sunday proved to be just another reason why living in the Santa Cruz Mountains is so awesome as the annual event Pinot in Paradise took place.

Hundreds of dedicated Pinot lovers attended the sold out event last weekend to pay homage to their favorite wine, and the winemakers made sure they wouldn’t go home disappointed.  Visitors were first greeted at the door and given full sized, Pinot Noir style glasses as the vessel for tasting some of the best wines in the world. When first walking into the room, one can’t help but to ask the question, “Where do I start?” But with each winery in alphabetical order, it was easy to navigate from some old favorites, to new wineries that normally have their doors closed to the public.

Of course, it was easy to be distracted by the abundance of gourmet snacks. Succulent pork belly sliders, stinky duck pate, and tangy Parmesan dipped in honey kept my palate alive and happy as I journeyed through paradise.

A highlight of the day was the opportunity to sample two different vintages of fine Pinot from Kings Mountain Winery. As usual, Heart o’ Mountains was a delicious treat that was guaranteed to please the palate of any Pinot lover.

Days like this remind me of why it’s so great to live in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The winemakers put forth years of experience and loads of effort to craft these delicious wines. Every wine lover knows the joy that comes from a stellar bottle. So, I must say thank you winemakers for your dedication to the craft. And thanks to SCMWA for organizing such a special event.

Our mysterious guest blogger, The WineGlutton, is a local, Santa Cruz Mountains wine lover who graciously agreed to give us his account of the fabulous Pinot Paradise event.  He can usually be found each weekend enjoying wines at many Santa Cruz Mountain wineries. Maybe you have met him and don’t even know it.

Barrel Tasting at Big Basin Vineyards

by Cheryl Wolhar - MyVineSpace on March 1, 2010

I had the opportunity to pour wine out at Big Basin Vineyards on Sunday and had a really great time meeting and chatting with everyone. Everyone that visited us at the winery on Sunday got the chance to try the 09 Lester Family Vineyard Pinot, the 09 Alfaro Family Vineyard Pinot and the 08 Coastview Syrah. All are still in the barrel and about 1 year away from bottling, however all are already fabulous. A couple of our visitors said they wish they could buy them now. I wish I could have a small barrel of the Lester at my house. It was definitely my favorite although all were great!

Sleepy Hollow for Halloween!

by Laura Ness - HerVineNess on October 28, 2009

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
One morning back in 1957, I was alarmed awake by the sound of enormous overhead noise. I knew this was more than the usual dragging of chairs and clodding of hunting boots across the floorboards that were part of the morning ritual of our upstairs neighbors. My parents, baby sister and I (age 3), lived in a rickety two-story farmhouse in the Catskill Mountains, replete with chickens, goats and gutted deer hanging from the porch. But this enormous sound wasn’t Butchie, the teenage boy who relentlessly teased our basset hound, trekking to the outhouse: it was thunder rolling about the Hudson Valley. My Mom explained that it was Rip Van Winkle bowling with a vengeance, after his hundred years of sleep. It would be a couple of decades til I understood the thunder of balls rolling down the alley, laying pins in their weighty wake. Far, far sooner, I gathered there were as many tales as trolls in those legendering mountains.
One of my favorite Halloweenish tales is set in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow, in Tarrytown, NY, just down the Hudson River from where my folks moved in 1959. Legend has it that lanky [...]
