More on Harvest: The Rush to Pick

by Laura Ness - HerVineNess on October 11, 2009

With the advent of the first big storm of the season — the remnants of a typhoon that hit Japan is due to slam into the Central Coast on Tuesday – there is lots of frenetic activity in the vineyards along the Central Coast. I just drove through the benchlands along the Arroyo Seco River, and there was still lots of merlot and cab still hanging, including some chardonnay.

Steve Pessagno, who has vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands, decided to pick the remaining reds rather than risk mold or rot after what could be a heavy rain. Chris Weideman of Pellerin decided to wait it out on the last of the zin grapes at Mesa del Sol, where all the sangiovese and syrah are long picked and fermented. We’ll see what the west wind brings us this week!

More on Monterey harvest here (plus a few more ideas on using radicchio!):
