More on Harvest: The Rush to Pick

by Laura Ness - HerVineNess on October 11, 2009

With the advent of the first big storm of the season — the remnants of a typhoon that hit Japan is due to slam into the Central Coast on Tuesday – there is lots of frenetic activity in the vineyards along the Central Coast. I just drove through the benchlands along the Arroyo Seco River, and there was still lots of merlot and cab still hanging, including some chardonnay.
Steve Pessagno, who has vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands, decided to pick the remaining reds rather than risk mold or rot after what could be a heavy rain. Chris Weideman of Pellerin decided to wait it out on the last of the zin grapes at Mesa del Sol, where all the sangiovese and syrah are long picked and fermented. We’ll see what the west wind brings us this week!
More on Monterey harvest here (plus a few more ideas on using radicchio!):

Introducing “Her VineNess”

by Cheryl Wolhar - MyVineSpace on October 1, 2009

I want to introduce you all to Laura Ness, aka, “Her VineNess” and welcome her to the MyVineSpace blog where she will be a guest contributor for the foreseeable future. Laura and I met at a Wine Makers Dinner at Restaurant James Randall early in September. We had a wonderful time, great food and spectacular wine.  As I said in an earlier blog, I am convinced that we were sitting at the fun table and got a chance to not only meet Laura but a few other Santa Cruz Mountain characters including Katy Lovell from Poetic Cellars.
Laura is a long-time resident of the Santa Cruz Mountains in Northern California, where rugged terrain helps create uniquely character-driven wine. She’s been exploring the ever-growing wine regions of California for nearly 30 years, and writes for many industry and consumer publications.  Here’s a post from Jo Diaz of “PS I Love You” about Laura and here’s an article written by Laura for Wine Business Monthly regarding the 7th annual Petite Sirah Noble Symposium at Concannon.
Her VineNess will tell you that great wine is like poetry: it sings to you in a voice you can’t ignore, and with a melody you can never forget.  [...]

It’s been a fast and furious harvest for Poetics Cellars. Winemaker, winegrower, and woman of all trades, Katy Lovell, says, “I have harvested Cab. Sauv., Cab. Franc, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Mourvedre, Sangiovese, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Barbera and Carignane. The fruit looks beautiful this year. The Livermore vineyards were cropped lighter this year [...]
