If you’re heading to Ft. Mason in San Francisco tomorrow, Sat, Feb 20th, to indulge in the sea of wines that won medals at the SF Chronicle competition, get ready for a lot of company. This event is always wildly popular and it’s easy to get lost in the flood of amazing wines that will tempt you to taste your way into mind-numbing medal overload.

Here are a few wines you don’t want to miss:

2007 Wood Family Raboli vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel — from a ridiculously low-yielding vineyard comes this amazing blockbuster zinfandel made in the only style winemaker Rhonda Wood would ever do with a Zin: massively bold. It’s fantastic, with macerated blueberries, blackberries and a monstrous intesisty. Holy moly!

Aver Family will showcase their Silver medalist “Hope,” and their Bronze medalist, “Heritage” at the Chronicle tasting. “Hope” is one of the best Rhone style wines out there, and the Cabernet-based “Heritage” is smooth as velvet and easy to drink.

Also some lovely Santa Cruz Mountains Pinots that are not to be missed:

  • Muccigrosso Vineyards-2007 Pinot Noir- Gold Medal
  • Santa Cruz Mountain Winery-2007 Pinot Noir Branciforte Creek- Silver Medal
  • Storrs-2006 Pinot Noir- Gold Medal
  • Thomas Fogarty-2008 Pinot Noir- Gold Medal
  • Vine Hill-2007 Pinot Noir- Gold Medal

Enjoy responsibly – oh what the heck, it’s the Olympics! Just go for it!
