One of the pleasures of the holidays that lingers long, perhaps too long, on the lips and hips, is the profound number of sweets that seem to accumulate like scrap pieces of wrapping paper, non-functional light strands and Christmas cards that make you turn to your spouse and say, “Who the ?! are these people?” What a collection I got this year, including homemade Texas pecan brittle, butter cookies, rum balls, truffles, and Moose Munch from Harry & David, for which my sister gave me a gift certificate for a year’s supply. Which leaves me wondering, what the heck ever happened to fruitcake? Just when I finally found the perfect wine to make fruitcake sing, dance and do cartwheels (late harvest chardonnay), suddenly it became the equivalent of putting coal in a stocking. Sadly, nobody gives fruitcake as gifts any more…
