Clayhouse Malbec Twists, Turns Heads

by Laura Ness - HerVineNess on October 16, 2009

2008 Clayhouse Malbec, Red Cedar vineyard, Paso Robles, $15

As one of the Bordeaux varieties, Malbec is often rationed to a mere percent or so of a typical blend, sort of like being given a 5-word bit part in a 3-hour play. But Argentina became its primary stage, giving Malbec the starring role in many an operatic rendition of big, bold, bodacious Bordeaux, unlike any other. This fruity, feisty monster demonstrates how nicely matched Malbec is with the warmth of Paso Robles.

Planted in calcareous sandstone and shale, the Red Cedar Vineyard produced a rich, full bodied Malbec in 2008. One lot was pressed after 8 days of fermentation: the second, after 18 days, allowing extended maceration to soften the tannins. This wine was a huge favorite at a recent tasting, with those loving rich, dark plum, ripe raspberry and baking spice flavors. It’s a screwcap to boot. Instant gratification for those who like ‘em big, yet easy.

Glad you liked the wine. We stopped making Malbec for a few years, then decided that we liked the fruit so much and started up again in 2008. Had it with Hearst Ranch grass feed tri-tip (also Central Coast) the other night and it was awesome.

Glad you started making it again! We need to spread the word about the local versions of wines people think can only be found in the “import” aisle — which in some places, is the whole freaking store!
