While skimming through the web today, I came across this post from Jo Diaz, of Wine-Blog-Org, regarding the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA. She does a great job of pointing out the unique aspects of our AVA and I wanted to share it with all my friends and neighbors here in Santa Cruz Mountains.

She wrote about her experiences at Pinot World where there was a panel session examining the Santa Cruz AVA.
The panel was made up of:
• Joseph Martin, Martin Alfaro
• Jeffrey Patterson, Mount Eden
• Edward Muns, Muns Vineyard
• Jerold O’Brien, Silver Mountain
• Michael Martella, Thomas Fogarty Winery
• Sal Godinez, Vine Hill Winery
Jeffrey Patterson gave a comprehensive, historical perspective of Pinot Noir in the Santa Cruz Mountains. He discussed Paul Masson, who brought cuttings from Burgundy and Charles Lefranc, an immigrant from France who had expanded viticulture that was introduced into the Santa Clara Valley by the Catholic missionaries. Patterson also referred to Dr. Bruce in the audience before he began to talk about his winery, wine making techniques, and tasting his two Pinots, a 2006 and a 2007 Mount Eden Estate.
O’Brien talked about how all winemakers in the Santa Cruz Mountains are mavericks and singled out three original Santa Cruz Mountain Mavericks.
- David Bruce
- Ken Burnap
- David Bennion
Top 3 take-aways:
- How the AVA is almost 480,000 acres; from Woodside in the north, to Watsonville in the south.
- Is located between the Monterey Bay’s Pacific Ocean on the west, and the San Francisco Bay on the east.
- Most importantly, who has been the most responsible for building the original framework of Santa Cruz Mountains AVA.
